Yoon Ahn surfs up the new wave!

Whilst Paris Fashion Week might seem like a distant memory, I am still reveling in the highlights, one of which was the SS19 ‘Waves’ presentation by Yoon Ahn that took place on DAY 1 of PFW. With her new appointment as Dior Homme’s jewelry designer, we walked in with baited breath ready to see the accessories that would adorn this presentation. Among the likes of photographer Christina Paik, and new Artistic Director of Dior Homme, Kim Jones, we walked through the presentation and were instantly drawn into the theme.

Upon arrival we were faced with a gold surfboard with Yoon’s brand “Ambush” emblazoned across it. From gilets inspired by life jackets, wet suits, and jewellery resembling Hawaiian lei necklaces, Yoon presented a wavy collection. The swimwear theme was evident but not overpowering and created a relaxed ambience. Ambush don’t do holidays but if it did, this would be the attire; sliders, citrus colours, straw hats and ponchos.

Of-course what got our attention were the accessories and jewellery, more specifically 2 items; the ‘crushed can’ cross body and the silver cowrie shell bead necklace. Having had cowrie beads in our hair growing up, seeing them added to a beaded necklace, transformed them from the childhood memory to heritage statement piece. The crossbody can bag in luminous orange, is a playful wardrobe addition. With fashion exploring the transformation of items such as holsters and trash cans and turning them into bags, it is absolutely fitting and innovative for Yoon to do the same in the style of a drinks can.

The presentation itself being in an intimate setting gave us the opportunity to really get into the design and was an optimum environment to view and appreciate the details in Yoon’s jewellery. Whilst we may not naturally associate jewellery with beach wear, each item whether, ring, bracelet or necklace, complemented the pieces to create the surfer dude/babe vibe in the most simplistic way possible. We are definitely going to be riding the Ambush wave beyond Spring Summer 2019.
