Continuing on my search for brands rooted in African heritage, this time I’m looking to West Africa for wardrobe inspiration and ofcourse I found it in abundance. The latest brand to strike my attention is the brainchild of Jacques Agbobly who is of Togolese and Ghanaian descent.
As a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund finalist it’s already expected that Agbobly sets a high standard in delivering statement design. Agbobly personifies the magnetism of its NYC base and the vibrancy of its African heritage. It’s safe to say that their body of work feels almost transitional; the result of a person migrating from one place to another and the enmeshing of cultures that occurs.
Agbobly has a playful style of design shown in exaggerated proportions such as elongated sleeves, ruched waistlines and billowing dresses. Their stunning beaded denim complete with contrast stitching, reminiscent of the colourful beaded hairstyles often seen on black children.
Joy and childlike wonder are evident in this effervescent collection from the embroidery to the prints and even the homely set design, everything about this captivating body of work is simply lovely!
