With the onslaught of fashion weeks being upon us, I thought it best to shed some light on some of the talent in fashion week locations I’m yet to attend. This year Copenhagen Fashion Week showcased one of the best Dutch talents in design, who also opened Amsterdam Fashion Week.
Ofcourse I’m talking about none other than couturier Tess Van Zalinge, and her eponymous label. I recently came across her designs through actress Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing who walked the Amsterdam show. Zalinge’s style of work is best described as the result of a deep understanding of architectural design and varying interpretations of femininity.
Creating predominantly white garments, Zalinger conveys both purity and strength. Opting for designs with focal centre pieces such as corseted tops, billowing sleeves and exaggerated shoulders. She uses materials such as tulle and organza to juxtapose strength with softness and enlargening the garments to allow for free flowing movement.
There’s something captivating about Zalinge’s “Klavertje Drive” collection as each piece feels like a cohesive commentary around power and femininity. Although new to me, her work is distinctive and recognisable; and if asked about whether she should continue touring the fashion calendar, I’ll always says Yes!
